In our first lesson, we’ll talk about your interests, what you need help with, and your musical goals. Whether you’re into classical, commercial styles, or improvisation, appropriate materials will then be assigned along with a customized lesson plan. It’s all about making sure the lessons feel right for you!
-
In addition to traditional cello methods, I also offer lessons in commercial or multi-style cello playing. Students can choose to focus entirely on this area or blend it with traditional study for a hybrid approach.
“Commercial cello” draws from both classical and jazz foundations, and opens the door to playing in a wide variety of contemporary styles such as pop, R&B, rock, bluegrass, folk, and more.
In these lessons, we’ll cover:
Scales and patterns for improvisation (pentatonic scales, modes, etc.)
“Comping” chords and creating bass lines in different styles
Rhythmic bowing techniques, chopping, and strumming
Amplification and live looping to add harmony, groove, and improvisation

Cindy
"Caleb has been giving our son lessons for several years. My son had come close to quitting until we found Caleb. Caleb really connected with him and helped reinvigorate his love of playing music. Caleb assigns both fun, contemporary music and classical pieces. I usually hear the two of them laughing during lessons, truly enjoying the experience. Caleb has also helped him prepare for various auditions and as a result my son has made it into the honors orchestra for our county every year. Caleb has also helped him organize a quartet of friends to play together-- another part of my son's cello experience that has really added to his enjoyment of playing. I have been most impressed with Caleb's ability to connect with my son on his level (not always an easy task when working with teenagers!). I am so grateful that we found Caleb and could not recommend him more highly!"

“Caleb has been a wonderful teacher - I am so happy to take lessons with him! He has a lot of knowledge about the technique of the instrument and how to create a beautiful sound. I often feel he makes one small adjustment and suddenly I sound 10 times better! He is also very kind, considerate, and has been very flexible with me about scheduling. I 100% recommend him to anyone wanting to take cello lessons.”

“Being my very first cello instructor, Caleb not only taught me how to play, but gave me a desire. Usually, the first experience determines the outcome of what happens, for example, if you never enjoy an instrument, it is inevitable that you would drop it quite soon. However, Caleb found me real enthusiasm and motivation. Without someone like him, I probably would have had given up cello after my first year. He is the most enjoyable and helpful instructor so far.”
